Should you stay on social media during your divorce?

People interact on social media daily, so it’s just a part of life for many. While there’s not necessarily anything wrong with social media, it can lead to challenges if you’re going through a divorce.

Some people in this position may opt to stay off social media, but others may want to continue using their favorite platforms. These are a few important things to consider if you’re trying to decide whether staying on social media is a good idea or not.

Social media activity can be used in court

What you say and do on social media can be used against you in the divorce case. Thinking about how things you post may be perceived is important because certain things may call your statements into question. A seemingly harmless post about a vacation could be used to show that financial irresponsibility is present or that financial statements aren’t accurate.

People can take screenshots of anything posted online, and those screenshots can be shared or subpoenaed. It’s impossible to control who may get their hands on the screenshots that are taken.

Avoid posting about the divorce

Social media isn’t a good place to share your frustrations about the divorce. Things that are shared with your ex could be a negative point in the legal proceedings. There’s also a chance that they may lead to conflicts. Remember that perception matters, so even vague complaints may be misinterpreted.

Determining how to handle every aspect of your life during a divorce is critical. It may be best to work with someone familiar with these matters so they can offer guidance.
